AUSTIN, Texas — A stolen fire engine led Austin Police on a late-night pursuit Wednesday, turning some heads.

According to KVUE, the pursuit ended just after 1 a.m. with a suspect in custody.

KVUE spoke with a tow truck driver who witnessed the bizarre scene.

“I started noticing police cruisers started to … constrict the highway down … there was a hill in front of me,” the witness said. “Once I came over the hill, I’d seen the firetruck with several cruisers behind it.”

He also said that debris falling off the Austin Fire Department engine – including oxygen tanks, fire extinguishers and hoses – appeared to damage the roadway.

Police say the ladder truck was stolen while firefighters were responding to a call, reports News 4 Austin. State troopers were then called in and ultimately used spike strips to end the pursuit.

No one was injured during the incident, according to KVUE.
