NEW YORK — The NYPD announced Thursday that a former Staten Island top cop is the new chief of department.
Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison will assume the highest-ranking uniformed position in the department, according to a tweet Thursday by Commissioner Dermot Shea.
The announcement came Thursday after news reports that Chief of Department Terence Monahan would be retiring.
Harrison became a police officer in 1992 and patrolled the 114th Precinct in Astoria. Three years later, he was promoted to detective and worked in several patrol boroughs, including Staten Island.
In 2014, he became the executive officer of Patrol Borough Staten Island, according to Advance records.
Harrison was fundamental in the creation and implementation of Neighborhood Policing, which the department recently expanded to include an emphasis on at-risk youth.
Harrison’s promotion is part of an anticipated shake-up within the NYPD’s top brass, while Dermot Shea is expected to remain as the city’s police commissioner, the Daily News reported.
