WASHINGTON – Merrick Garland, President Joe Biden’s pick for Attorney General, said Monday during his confirmation hearing that he does not support defunding the police.
According to Fox News, Sen. Josh Hawley asked the question.
“President Biden has said he does not support defunding the police and neither do I,” Garland said in response, citing the difficulty officers faced during the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
Garland added that he does believe in providing alternate resources for certain issues, such as mental health response.
Calls to “defund the police” became a rallying cry during the George Floyd protests last year, prompting some cities to cut law enforcement budgets, remove police from schools, and make other significant changes.
